A Decade of Impact: MDFT in Estonia
MDFT is more than a therapy—it’s a system that adapts to real family needs, reaching youth in their homes, schools, and communities.”
In 2014, Estonia took a step to better support children and youth at risk by launching the Development of a Support System for Children and Youth at Risk initiative—part of the European Economic Area (EEA) Grants program. From this effort, Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) emerged as a powerful solution for youth and families facing complex challenges.
Since then, MDFT has been embedded into Estonia’s national support structure, with five teams offering therapy in Estonian, Russian, and English. Over the last decade, 1,000 families have completed treatment—an impressive reach in a country of just 1.3 million people.
In July 2025, all MDFT teams in Estonia, including those in secure institutions and prisons, will unite under the Social Insurance Board, further strengthening the nationwide implementation.
